The Haryana government's Swachh Bharat Mission aimed to make the state Open Defecation Free (ODF) by the end of 2017. Although only 73% of households had toilets, the government was able to identify most of the homes without them. Through a community-led approach, over 700,000 toilets were constructed in less than three years. Haryana was officially declared an ODF state on June 22nd, 2017. This success shows that dedicated community efforts and government support can lead to significant behavioral changes and the achievement of sanitation goals.
